How Children’s Talents and Skills are Promoted Through Sports and Arts at Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG).
At Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG), we believe that every child is born with unique talents and potential waiting to be unlocked. In the heart of Gomba District, Uganda, we are committed to empowering disadvantaged children by providing opportunities to explore and develop their skills through sports, music, dance, and drama. Our mission in this is clear: to keep young minds engaged, inspired, and away from negative influences, as we firmly believe that “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop”. By fostering a vibrant environment filled with activities like football, netball, volleyball, basketball, and the performing arts, we are shaping a brighter future for the youth of Gomba.
Empowering through a Variety of Sports activities to the youths.
Sports play a pivotal role in our programs at FCG. We provide children with balls to engage in football, netball, volleyball, and basketball, ensuring they remain physically active and mentally stimulated. These activities do more than just keep the children busy, they build teamwork, discipline, leadership, and resilience. Whether it is a young boy scoring a goal on the football pitch or a girl mastering a serve in volleyball, every moment spent in sports helps these children discover their strengths and build confidence.

Football, for instance, is a universal language in Gomba, uniting children from different backgrounds. Through organized matches and training sessions, we see shy children transform into assertive team players. Netball and volleyball, popular among girls, promotes friendship and teach the value of collaboration. Basketball, though less common due to limited equipment, sparks excitement and introduces new skills to those eager to learn. These sports not only promote physical health but also provide a safe space for self-expression, helping children steer clear of negative influences like drug abuse or early pregnancies that often prey on idle youth.
However, one of our biggest challenges is the lack of sufficient sports equipment. Many of our children share a single ball among large groups, which limits their ability to practice and compete effectively. We dream of a day when every child at FCG has access to quality balls and other sports gear to fully explore their athletic potential.
Nurturing Creativity through Music, Dance, and Drama
At FCG, we recognize that not every child’s talent lies on the sports field. Some children shine brightest when given a microphone, a stage, or a musical instrument. That is why we place a strong emphasis on music, dance, and drama (MDD) to nurture creativity and self-expression. For those with a passion for singing, we provide opportunities to develop their vocal talents through group performances and choir activities. Children who show an aptitude for music are introduced to instruments like the keyboard and guitar, allowing them to explore new dimensions of their creativity.
Our MDD programs are more than just extracurricular activities, they are a platform for building confidence, cultural pride, and emotional resilience. Through drama, children learn to tell stories, express complex emotions, and address social issues like gender equality and environmental conservation. Dance connects them to their cultural roots while allowing them to innovate and create new moves. For those learning instruments, the journey of mastering a guitar chord or a keyboard melody instills patience and discipline, qualities that serve them well in all areas of life.
Our music programs face the same challenge as our sports initiatives that is lack of resources. We have one keyboard, and two local drums, which restricts the number of children who can participate. Without enough equipment, some children miss out on the chance to discover and perfect their musical talents.
The FCG Approach is to Promote Every Child’s Potential
What sets FCG apart is our commitment to recognizing and nurturing the unique potential in every child. We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we carefully observe each child to identify their strengths and interests, whether it is scoring goals, singing a soulful melody, or captivating an audience with a dramatic performance. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to create tailored opportunities for growth, ensuring that no child’s talent goes unnoticed or undeveloped.

For example, a child who may not excel in sports might find their calling in our music program, where they learn to play the keyboard or lead a choir. Conversely, a child who struggles with stage fright might discover their confidence on the football field. By offering a diverse range of activities, we ensure that every child has a chance to shine.
Our Big Challenge is Limited Resources.
Despite our passion and dedication, FCG faces significant challenges due to limited resources. Our sports programs rely on a small number of balls, many of which are worn out from constant use. In our music and arts programs, we have only a handful of instruments, leaving many children waiting for their turn to learn. Without adequate equipment, we cannot fully expand our programs to reach more children or provide the depth of training they deserve.
This is where we need help. We are calling on volunteers, philanthropists, and organizations to support our mission by donating sports equipment like footballs, netballs, volleyballs, and basketballs, as well as musical instruments such as guitars, keyboards, and other tools for creativity. These donations would enable us to expand our programs, reach more children, and provide them with the resources they need to thrive.
A Call to Action: Join Us in Transforming Lives.
At FCG, we are not just keeping children busy but we are transforming lives. By providing opportunities in sports and the arts, we are helping disadvantaged children in Gomba District build brighter futures. But we cannot do it alone. We invite volunteers with expertise in coaching soccer, training dancers, teaching music, or mentoring in drama to join our team. Your skills could make a life-changing difference for a child who might otherwise lack access to such opportunities.
We also appeal to philanthropists and donors who can provide the equipment we so desperately need. A single football or guitar can impact dozens of children, giving them a chance to discover their talents and stay on a positive path. Together, we can ensure that no child in Gomba is left idle, vulnerable to negative influences, or without the chance to shine.
Join us today in our mission to keep young minds active, engaged, and full of hope. Together, we can prove that an idle mind has no place in Gomba district because at FCG, we are building a future where every child’s potential is unleashed.
