Advocate Clean Water

Advocating for Clean Water Sources at Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG)

Our Mission: Clean Water for a Healthier Gomba

At Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG), we are committed to transforming the lives of children and communities in Gomba District, Uganda, by advocating for access to clean and safe water sources. Water is life, and yet, Gomba remains significantly underserved when it comes to clean water. Many schools and communities rely on contaminated water sources, often shared with animals, putting the health of children and families at risk. At FCG, we strive to ensure that every school and community in Gomba has access to trusted, clean water sources to safeguard health, promote education, and improve quality of life. Our advocacy efforts aim to raise awareness, mobilize resources, and partner with organizations and individuals to bring sustainable water solutions to Gomba.

The Water Crisis in Gomba

Gomba District faces a critical challenge in accessing clean water. Many communities and schools depend on unsafe water sources such as stagnant ponds, rivers, or shallow wells, which are often contaminated with bacteria, parasites, and other pollutants. In some cases, children and families share these water sources with livestock, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. This lack of clean water has far-reaching consequences:

-Health Risks: Contaminated water leads to frequent illnesses, particularly among children, who are more vulnerable to waterborne diseases. These health issues can result in missed school days, malnutrition, and long-term developmental challenges.

-Educational Barriers: Without clean water in schools, children struggle to stay hydrated and healthy, impacting their ability to learn and thrive. The burden of fetching water from distant, unsafe sources often falls on children, particularly girls, reducing their time for education.

-Community Well-Being: Families using dirty water face increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity, perpetuating cycles of poverty.

At FCG, we recognize that clean water is not just a necessity but a fundamental right. Access to safe water is essential for healthy communities, thriving schools, and empowered children.

Our Advocacy Efforts for Clean Water

Friends of Children in Gomba is dedicated to addressing the water crisis through advocacy, education, and collaboration. Our efforts focus on ensuring that schools and communities have access to reliable, clean water sources. Here is how we are working to make a difference:

-Raising Awareness: We educate children, parents, and community members about the importance of clean water and the dangers of using contaminated sources. Through workshops, school programs, and community dialogues, we highlight how clean water improves health, education, and economic opportunities.

-Promoting Hygiene Practices: Alongside our push for clean water sources, we teach children and families about proper hygiene practices, such as handwashing and water storage, to maximize the benefits of clean water and prevent disease.

-Partnering with Stakeholders: We collaborate with local leaders, schools, and community groups to identify the most pressing water needs and advocate for sustainable solutions, such as boreholes, rainwater harvesting systems, and protected wells.

-Empowering Children as Advocates: We involve children in our advocacy efforts, encouraging them to speak out about the need for clean water in their schools and communities. Through drama, songs, and presentations, children share their experiences and inspire action.

Our goal is to create a ripple effect, where informed communities demand and sustain clean water initiatives, ensuring long-term access to safe water for all.

A Special Thank You to Dr. Harris Kirumira Ssengo

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Harris Kirumira Ssengo for his remarkable contribution to Gomba’s water access. By funding the construction of boreholes in the community, Dr. Ssengo has provided clean, reliable water to hundreds of families, reducing their reliance on contaminated sources. These boreholes have brought hope and health to communities, allowing children to attend school without the burden of waterborne illnesses and enabling families to thrive. Dr. Ssengo’s generosity serves as an inspiring example of how individual action can transform lives, and we honor his commitment to the people of Gomba district.

Our Challenges and Needs

Despite our efforts, the water crisis in Gomba remains a significant challenge. Many schools and communities still lack access to clean water, and the resources needed to address this issue are limited. Some of the key challenges we face include:

-Insufficient Infrastructure: The number of boreholes, wells, and other clean water sources in Gomba is far below what is needed to serve the population.

-Maintenance Costs: Existing water sources, such as boreholes, require regular maintenance to remain functional, which can be costly for communities with limited resources.

-Lack of Expertise: Implementing and sustaining water projects requires technical knowledge, which is often in short supply locally.

To overcome these challenges, FCG is calling for support from NGOs, volunteers, philanthropists, and well-wishers who share our vision of a Gomba with universal access to clean water.
