Promoting Child and Community Health at Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG)
Our Commitment to a Healthy Community Gomba
At Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG), we believe that a healthy body fosters a healthy mind, and a healthy community creates a brighter future for all. In Gomba District, Uganda, we are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children and their families through targeted initiatives that address critical health needs. Our programs focus on providing sanitary pads to girls, promoting immunization through Uganda’s government-supported Child Days Plus program, and encouraging hygiene practices among children and youth. By addressing these essential health needs, we aim to empower the girl child, the boy child, and the entire Gomba community to lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.
Supporting the Girl Child with Sanitary Pads
For many girls in Gomba, access to sanitary pads is a significant challenge that affects their health, dignity, and education. Without proper menstrual hygiene products, girls often miss school during their periods, leading to gaps in learning and reduced self-confidence. At FCG, we are committed to breaking this barrier by providing sanitary pads to girls in schools and communities across Gomba.
Our sanitary pad distribution program ensures that girls can manage their periods safely and with dignity. By supplying reusable or disposable sanitary pads, we help girls stay in school, maintain their health, and focus on their education without the fear of stigma or discomfort. Additionally, we educate girls on menstrual hygiene, teaching them how to use and care for sanitary products and dispelling myths and taboos surrounding menstruation. This initiative not only promotes physical health but also boosts girls’ confidence and empowering them to pursue their dreams without interruption.

Promoting Immunization through Child Days Plus
Immunization is a cornerstone of child health, protecting against preventable diseases that can have devastating consequences. At FCG, we actively support Uganda’s government-led Child Days Plus program, which delivers vaccinations and health services to children in schools and communities. We work tirelessly to ensure that every child in Gomba is immunized against diseases such as measles, polio, tetanus, and diphtheria.
Our efforts include:
-Community Awareness Campaigns: We educate parents and caregivers about the importance of immunization, addressing misconceptions and encouraging them to take their children for vaccinations. Through community dialogues, drama performances, and school-based events, we emphasize that vaccines are safe, effective, and essential for child health.
-Collaboration with Schools: We partner with schools to facilitate Child Days Plus activities, ensuring that vaccination drives reach as many children as possible. Our team coordinates with health workers to organize immunization sessions and provide follow-up support.
-Advocacy for Access: We advocate for increased access to immunization services in remote areas of Gomba, where healthcare facilities may be scarce, ensuring no child is left behind.
By promoting immunization, we are helping to build a healthier future for Gomba’s children, reducing the burden of preventable diseases and enabling them to thrive.
Encouraging Hygiene Practices Among Youth
Good hygiene is fundamental to health, and at FCG, we encourage children and youth to adopt habits that keep them clean and healthy. Poor hygiene practices can lead to infections, skin conditions, and other health issues that affect both physical and mental well-being. We focus on teaching youth the importance of personal hygiene, including:
-Regular Bathing: We educate children and youth on the importance of bathing regularly to prevent infections and maintain personal health.
-Washing Clothes: Clean clothing is essential for hygiene and self-esteem. We encourage youth to wash their clothes regularly and provide support, such as access to soap, where resources are limited.
-Oral Hygiene and General Cleanliness: We promote habits like brushing teeth, washing hands, and keeping living spaces clean to reduce the spread of diseases.
Through workshops, peer-led discussions, and school programs, we empower youth to take responsibility for their hygiene. These efforts not only improve health outcomes but also foster a sense of pride and self-respect among Gomba’s young people.
Providing Materials to Improve Health
At FCG, we go beyond education to provide tangible resources that enhance the health of children and communities. In addition to sanitary pads, we distribute materials such as soap, toothbrushes, and hygiene kits to schools and families in need. These resources make it easier for individuals to practice good hygiene, even in resource-constrained environments. By addressing both the educational and material needs of the community, we create a holistic approach to health promotion that benefits the girl child, the boy child, and the community at large.

Our Challenges and Needs
While our commitment to health promotion is strong, we face significant challenges in meeting the needs of Gomba’s children and communities. Limited resources and infrastructure pose barriers to scaling our programs. Some of our key challenges include:
-Shortage of Sanitary Pads: The demand for sanitary pads far exceeds our supply, leaving many girls without access to these essential products.
-Limited Health Resources: Schools and communities often lack basic hygiene materials like soap, toothbrushes, and clean water, hindering our efforts to promote hygiene.
-Access to Healthcare: Remote areas of Gomba have limited access to healthcare facilities, making it difficult to deliver immunization and other health services consistently.
To overcome these challenges, we need support from volunteers, philanthropists, and organizations who share our vision of a healthier Gomba.
