Fighting Hunger for Disadvantaged Children in Gomba: How Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG) is Making a Difference
In Uganda, hunger is still a big problem and greatest enemy of school-going children, casting a shadow over their education and well-being. Many children in Gomba district face the daily challenge of empty stomachs, both at home and in school, which hinders their ability to learn, grow, and thrive. These children move long distances from their homes to school when hungry. At Friends of Children in Gomba (FCG), we are committed to breaking this cycle of hunger by creating sustainable avenues for children to access nutritious food, empowering communities, and fostering hope for a brighter future.
Addressing Hunger at School and Home
Hunger is a barrier to education and a threat to the future of our children. At FCG, we believe that no child should go to school or sleep on an empty stomach. Our mission is to ensure that disadvantaged children in Gomba district have access to food, both at school and in their homes. We work tirelessly to tackle this issue through innovative, community-driven solutions that promote food security and self-reliance.

Empowering Mothers with Improved Seeds and Farming Methods
One of our core initiatives is supporting families to grow their own food. We provide mothers in Gomba district with improved, high-yield seeds that are resilient to local conditions. These seeds enable families to plant enough food to feed their children consistently. Alongside this, we advocate for improved farming methods, teaching mothers sustainable agricultural practices that maximize crop yields. By equipping families with the tools and knowledge to grow their own food, we are helping to secure a steady food supply for children at home, reducing hunger and malnutrition.
Transforming Schools into Food-Secure Spaces
At FCG, we recognize that schools are more than just places of learning, they can also be hubs for nourishment. We encourage schools in Gomba district to hire land and plant food crops to provide meals for students. By growing their own food, schools can ensure that children receive at least one nutritious meal during the school day, which boosts attendance, concentration, and academic performance. This initiative not only addresses immediate hunger but also fosters a culture of self-sufficiency within schools.
Building a Community United Against Hunger
Hunger is a community challenge that requires a collective response. FCG actively engages the Gomba district community to join hands in the fight against hunger. We organize workshops and community dialogues to raise awareness about the importance of food security and collective action. By fostering a sense of shared responsibility, we inspire parents, teachers, and local leaders to work together to ensure that no child goes hungry. Our community-driven approach strengthens bonds and creates a united front against hunger.
A Call for Support and Volunteers
The fight against hunger is ongoing, and we cannot do it alone. FCG is calling on individuals, organizations, and volunteers to join us in this critical mission. We need support to provide and supply more improved seeds to families, expand school farming programs, and educate communities on sustainable farming practices. Volunteers with expertise in agriculture, nutrition, or community development can play a vital role in teaching families and schools the importance of planting enough food. Together, we can create a future where every child in Gomba community has access to the nourishment they need to thrive.
